It's alive! I just realized tonight how incredibly long it has been since I've updated Delineated, so I thought I better rectify that.

This was taken through the car window while driving back from Bonnaroo in June. Being a big White Stripes fan, I couldn't help myself.

In other news, on July 1st, Delineated.com turned 5! Even though I don't update much these days, I still hope this place will be around and kicking for years to come. And with that said, I will try to be better about updating.

Update: looks like my blog is busted, so if you see anything weird, that's why. For some reason, I'm unable to delete this entry!

Hatch Show Print

Hatch Show Print, in Nashville, TN, is one of the oldest working letterpress printers in the U.S. I wanted to go in the last time I went to Nashville, but wasn't able to, so I made sure to check it out when I went back this past June. This was taken late in the evening when it was closed, but I went back the next day to check out the inside. Very cool place...I could've spent a lot of time in there, if we didn't have to run off to Bonnaroo a few minutes later.

I have to apologize for being absolutely terrible with updating this site lately. I haven't been out shooting for the fun of it in a very long time, so have no fresh content to upload. My schedule is starting to normalize and I think I'll be able to consistently find time to get out there and shoot again very soon.

Also, I would like to thank 10,000 Words.net for including me on their 30 Amazing Photoblogs list, even though I don't feel I deserve it, since I've practically abandoned the place! I very much appreciate the nod, though. :)

Printers Alley in Nashville, TN. Tennessee had been experiencing quite the drought for most of the summer, and it figures that the sky would open up and pour rain the night I got into town and had to scout locations for a photo shoot the next day. It actually turned out to be a lot of fun running around in the rain, and I think it added a special ambience to this shot that wouldn't be there otherwise. Plus, I'm a sucker for umbrella shots!

Made a last minute trip down to Nashville at the end of last week to do a photoshoot for a magazine. Worked out well, since we didn't have the chance to check the city out when we were at Bonnaroo back in June.

First, let me just say how much fun the city is...there's something going on all the time and live music is playing at all hours of the day (including at the airport!). Secondly, you couldn't meet a nicer bunch of people. I had to spend my first evening scouting locations and everywhere I went I was invited in for a drink or conversation, and people were genuinely helpful in pointing me to some cool places to do a shoot (even if it turned out to be at a saloon other than their own). Southern hospitality at its finest! I'm looking forward to going back some day soon and exploring the city more thoroughly. Even if you're not a country music fan, you can really appreciate the culture and soul that Nashville has.

Maximo Park came through town the other week and while I was totally exhausted I'm glad I didn't miss them. I've been digging their latest album Our Earthly Pleasures since it came out and heard that their live show was pretty energetic. Another shot from Graceland. This was from the Sirius satellite booth where it's all Elvis music all the time. The vignetting is from using a digital lens with a film camera, creating barreling. I kinda like the effect...it works with some images better than others, but I'm going to keep playing.

Took a detour to Memphis after Bonnaroo to visit Graceland. Maybe it was the fact that I was exhausted after 4 days of shooting bands in the blazing sun, but I found it to be underwhelming. I was expecting even more over-the-top and a bit more access to the house. It was also a little too touristy for my liking -- though, really, what else should I have expected?

When searching for an image for an upcoming project, I found this photo on the same disc. It's from way back in April 2005, and for some reason I totally overlooked it then. I love finding something in a photo later that you didn't originally see at the time.

As you've probably noticed, I haven't updated a whole lot lately. Been keeping pretty busy and my focus has been elsewhere. I don't want the site to die, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have to keep up with it and shoot new (non-music) stuff. Apologies for the lack of updates lately. I've had a rough month! First my camera died, then I had gallbladder surgery and then just to kick me while I was down, my computer died. Everything seems to be back up and running now, and I didn't lose any data, like I feared.

With the warm weather approaching, I'm going to make a big effort to get out and shoot non-music stuff. It seems to be all-consuming these days. However, that said, I should mention that I got my first Spin.com assignment published the other day. Check it out here if you're interested. Most people who also check out my Flickr page already know this, but I had emergency gallbladder surgery on Wednesday night. I was sent home on Thursday morning and am doing quite well, all things considered.

Just thought I'd put up this quick post to say that I'll be out of commission for a little bit...was hoping to be able to get out and shoot non-music stuff this week, since the weather has gotten nicer, but apparently my body had other plans for me. Hopefully I'll be up and at it again soon! Sorry for the crap quality of the photo...I took it with my cell phone while bored, waiting in the hall for my ultrasound.

My camera died on me right in the middle of a show this weekend. The shutter is the culprit. Since my camera is 2.5 years old and has about 85,000 actuations on it, it didn't make sense to get it repaired. Sooo, a new camera it is. I need to recoup at least some of this cash since it was a total emergency purchase, so I'm having a print sale.

Last December, I shot Les Georges Leningrad for a CBC Radio 3 session, and decided to check their full show out again later that night. It was a ton of fun, even though I had to eventually stand on the corner of the stage not to get slammed against all night. The vantage point provided some really interesting perspectives, such as the one above. The full set is up at Live Baby Live (my new site).

From the archives. I've always really liked this shot but never thought it was post-worthy...it's been sitting in my archives for well over a year, and I threw it up on Flickr and people seem to dig it, so thought I might as well throw it up on here, too.

The blue background is actually a paper backdrop from a shoot, used here, and is also the same backdrop used here and here (all shot on the same day). As you can see, I adjusted the colour for each shot according to feel...above is the actual colour, if I recall correctly.

Wow, I didn't realize it had been so long since I last updated! I've been quite busy lately and many things have gone on the backburner as a result. I hope I haven't lost you forever!

This was taken back in January one night when I couldn't sleep. They're the only toys I own, so I made due with what I had. As you can probably tell, I wasn't thinking very clearly at the time. ;) The light source used here is a tiny LED pen light, which created the natural vignetting effect.

As you can probably tell by the lack of regular updates, I've been quite busy over the past little while and haven't really had much time to shoot anything for myself. I'm hoping that'll change soon, as I'd really like to get back to a daily schedule.

This is from ages ago when William was helping me out with lighting. We shot so many photos that night under so many different lighting conditions that it's easy for me to pull them out and play around. They're a very good learning tool.

Update: I had a chance to see this shot on an LCD monitor and it looked absolutely terrible! If you have an LCD, could you let me know how it looks to you?

I've had a few people ask me what exactly 'Through the Viewfinder' is, so I thought I'd put up an unedited photo to give you an idea (really, totally unedited aside from resize).

Basically, there are two cameras involved - a camera which has a viewfinder or ground glass, such as a Yashica or Duaflex II (in my case), as well as a digital camera (or whatever other camera you'd like to use). I shot this into a mirror so you could sort of see the process. You view and compose your subject with the Duaflex (seen here), and then focus your digital camera down onto the viewfinder and shoot what you see. During post-processing, you crop the shot into a square, keeping a bit of the black border around the glass.

Here's a good tutorial by Russ Morris that goes more in-depth, and includes how to make a contraption to prevent light leaks on the viewfinder.

This was shot at the ice rink at Mel Lastman Square -- which is much less used than Nathan Phillips Square, so if you're looking for a place to skate, that might be a better bet if you live above Bloor.

A few cool thing popped up on the net lately:

U2 released the video to Windows in the Sky, and it's absolutely brilliant. Great song and great video, with snippets of dozens of music legends. I could sit here and gush about it all day, but you really have to see it for yourself (video linked above). Thoughts?

Next, there's Wolfgang's Concert Vault, which hosts 100s of concerts from the 70s and 80s available to stream from start to finish (not available for download). I haven't had a chance to go through it thoroughly yet, but there are four David Bowie shows (3 from Montreal) that I'm hoping to find a good chunk of time to listen to. Other shows include Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, etc. Apparently there are a few lawsuits abound, so who knows how long some of the content will last...check it out.

On a more personal note, another new "thing" that will be popping up shortly is my new music photography site, Live Baby Live. I'm hoping it will be launched at the beginning of January. I'd much rather keep the music photography separate from my other photography. It bothers me to have music stuff scattered all over the place, and there's so much of it that it needs a home of it's own. I'm also really excited, because I'll be able to talk about music stuff without feeling like I'm annoying Delineated visitors with so many wordy posts like this one. Stay tuned!

302 / 2006

To answer the 'How Many Bands?' question, the count came out to 302. I'm pretty sure there were a few more, but I can't remember them, so I won't count 'em. I also have a few more shows to go to this year that I haven't counted...not 100% sure if I'll make it out to them (I'm so very tired!).

Congrats to Gary and Chris for guessing the closest at 260 and 282 respectively. :)

One lesson I've learned from all of this is to keep a spreadsheet database from the beginning, and not try to figure it out at the end of the year based on 100s of folders of music photos (although I'm glad I was smart enough to keep those organized properly).

Most of those shows were from the last 6 months of the year, so I'm already fearing next year's number.

So, I've tallied up the number of bands I've seen perform this year (to qualify, I had to have seen/heard 3 songs or more...or it would've been a lot more). Let's play a little game...I have a collection of 5 Toronto-related postcards which went into stores a few months ago, and will give away 2 sets to the two people who guess closest to the number of bands I've watched and/or shot (very likely both). I have so many band photos that I haven't even so much as looked at, let alone edited. There are just not enough hours of the day to wade through everything. With the recent Grammy nomination announcements, I was reminded that I had photos of Corinne Bailey Rae that I hadn't touched, and in that pile, there was this shot of the feet of Rae's opener Kevin Devine. Glad I found it.

I'll be tallying up the numbers in the next few weeks re: how many band's I've seen/shot this year (and it'll be a totally ridiculous number), so hopefully I come across many more hidden gems along the way.

Another from the archives. I'm pretty sure it's from the CNE a few years ago, because I don't recall seeing a carousel anywhere else recently.

In the last entry, a bunch of you took me to task and said I should just get an external harddrive. Yes, yes I should. However, I should also get rid of the blurry, no-hope-in-hell shots, too, so the sifting through archives thing is actually quite useful.

Oh, and I meant to mention this on Monday -- thanks to all of you who came out to the opening of Pretty/Ugly. We had a number of people drop by and couldn't be happier to see the support. :) The show runs until January 5th, so if you were thinking about checking it out there's plenty of time. I'm seriously running out of hard drive space and have been going through everything figuring out what to backup and what to just get rid of (blurry shots, crappy composition shots, etc.), and have been coming upon shots I never edited, but probably should've. I shot Panic! At The Disco last night at Ricoh Coliseum. Although I wasn't crazy about the music, I shot the best music photos I've done in awhile, and feel pretty good about it. Last little while has been a bit crap for photos, so I really needed a decent set. Probably a few more to come from this set.

This particular shot was quite lucky. I was shooting something else, then saw him start to jump out of the corner of my eye...swung my camera around without looking in the viewfinder and just hit the shutter, praying something would turn out. I think this is one of my fave music shots ever (of mine).

Fans who attended Fiendfest, a punk show held last week at Funhaus. This was taken specifically during The Adicts' set, which was quite crazy with glitter, streamers, silly string, confetti, etc. Other bands who played: The Misfits, UK Subs, Osaka Popstar (with Marky Ramone), Orange, and Juicehead.

Btw, the guy with the mohawk and earplugs (left) is actually security, not a fan.

Yesterday's post reminded me of this shot I took ages ago with my Lomo LC-A. I used Kodak Elitechrome slide film and cross-processed it, hence the crazy yellow-green.

Speaking of Rock n Roll...I was asked by Mathew over at I (heart) Music to come up with my top 10 hottest Canadian bands for 2006, along with about 40 other music-type people. I'm a little late on this one (story of my life), but here are the results (posted last week).

The criteria was pretty open to interpretation, so I decided to base my answers mainly on seeing them live. Here were my picks, and a very brief note on why I chose them:

1) King Khan - blew everyone out of the water at NXNE
2) Deadly Snakes - even though they're done now
3) Metric - where *wasn't* Metric this year??
4) Billy Talent - say what you will, but they're going places...fast.
5) Malajube - French goodness that I don't understand but still love
6) Cadence Weapon - not even a big hip hop fan, but I loved him, and he was everywhere this year
7) Tokyo Police Club
8) Les Breastfeeders - another French band...this choice was a bit out there, but they were impressive live and gained many fans here recently
9) Emily Haines (solo)- Separated this choice from Metric because it's like comparing apples and oranges
10) MSTRKRFT - again, everywhere this year

I acquired a Kodak Duaflex II a few days ago, thanks to 6oh, and didn't waste much time making use of it. Took it on a day trip to Niagara Falls, and had a fun time testing it out on all the kitschy things on Clifton Hill. It had been quite awhile since I'd been out shooting anything just for the pleasure of it, so on Friday Jerrold and I spent the afternoon wandering around Bloor West, Roncesvalles and High Park. The sun was intensely bright, even late into the afternoon, but it was nice to soak it up and take advantage of getting some nice shadows.

This was shot with my 300D through the viewfinder of my Yashica-A. I really like the rough nostalgic feel that the dirty ground glass and mirror give these images. I just cleaned the Yashica out last night, so it'll be interesting to compare any images going forward. If I don't like them as much, I can always visit a saw mill and open the lid up to dirty it up again. ;)

Caught Be Your Own Pet and The Black Lips at the Horseshoe this past Monday...and what a crazy show it was. I almost got puked on by the singer of The Black Lips, which in turn almost made me throw up. I had beer sprayed all over me and almost got pieces of broken glass in the eye, all this while trying to fend off people thrashing all over the place. Such are the risks when you want to be in the fray of it all to "get the shots". I just wish I wasn't so sick at the time, as it probably wasn't the best choice of shows to see after being cooped up in the house for 4 days. I'm still feeling quite ill, hence the lack of updates.

From the Soulwax show at the Mod Club last night.

It's no secret that I'm not really into the whole DJ culture thing, but after being presented with tickets to their show, I checked out Soulwax's MySpace page and the songs they have up weren't bad. It was a mix of electronic and rock, and I managed to get through all 3 songs without piercing myself in the head with a blunt object, so I decided to see them. However, the actual show was much different. It was all boom, boom, boom, and while I can appreciate it for a short while, it's really not my bag. Every other person in the room seemed to be loving it, though.

I suppose I should've actually put a shot up of Soulwax themselves, but I liked this shot the best. The others can be found on Flickr.

Checked out France's very own Phoenix on Friday night at the Mod Club, courtesy of Kieran over at Arts & Crafts. It was my first time seeing them, and they were quite good, I must say. This, however, wouldn't be my only time seeing Phoenix this weekend, as they also played at V-Fest on Saturday. They seemed much more comfortable on a big festival stage than on the "intimate" stage (in comparison) of the Mod Club, and they succeeded in infusing some much needed energy into the lazy (and sparse) early afternoon V-Fest crowd.

V-Fest details to come in the next few days...still lots of editing to do, and I'm just recovering now.

Speaking of recovering, as you could probably tell by the lack of entries recently, I'd been having more issues with my internet. Seems Bell has resolved everything (well, for the moment), so hopefully I can get this baby back in gear. Don't give up on me, kids!

I shot this with a borrowed Canon 10-22mm lens. Being that I'm not used to shooting quite so wide, I had no concept of the perspective...in other words, objects are closer than they appear. After I took this shot, I looked up and the guitarist was about a foot away from my head. Same thing actually happened when I shot Jared Leto...he was standing right in front of me and was moving closer as I was shooting. I looked up and found myself pretty much right between his legs! I really had no problem with this, though. ;)

I shot the Warped Tour in Barrie a few weekends ago, and a band on the roster that stuck out like a sore thumb was Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. Talk about a flashback! I very distinctly recall rollerskating around my house when I was about 4 years old, singing 'I Love Rock n Roll', which my mom had on 45 rpm vinyl. That and Kenny Rogers' 'The Gambler' are two of the very first songs I remember ever knowing.

I wondered if the kids who attended Warped even knew who she was, but there was a pretty big crowd for her set. And the woman has aged very well!

International AIDS Conference Gala

The opening gala for the XIV International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada was held last night at the Rogers Centre. Along with the abundance of entertainment, many sobering speeches were made about just how serious this pandemic is (45 million infected with HIV/AIDS worldwide) and what needs to be done to fight this battle. Keynote speeches were given by Bill & Melinda Gates, who's message -- in simplified terms -- was that woman need to be empowered to protect themselves from being infected with HIV/AIDS at the hands of their partners. Most women in third world countries remain powerless to maintain their health, due to dominance of men in their cultures.

Unfortunately, the message of the evening was marred by the disgraceful fact that our Prime Minister was a no-show. This is the biggest AIDS conference in history, with over 24,000 delegates, and yet Stephen Harper thought it was more important to discuss building a military training base in Iqaluit this week. Because that couldn't have been scheduled at any other time, right? Because he didn't know about this conference since the beginning of his term as PM, right? What a shameful mistake.

Marty Casey & The Lovehammers

Last night I hit Lee's Palace to shoot Marty Casey & The Lovehammers. If the name sounds vaguely familiar to you, it may be because Marty Casey was the runner-up on Rockstar: INXS last summer. Admittedly, I was a JD Fortune fan, so Marty garnered very little attention from me. Yes, it's true, I was caught up in the show (as I am again this year...sigh).

To be perfectly honest, I didn't know what to expect. I didn't really know any of their songs, and since I have a very long 4 day shooting schedule ahead of me, I wanted to just stay home. Glad I didn't, because Marty was incredibly fun to shoot, and is an engaging musician. I also learned a new trick or two this evening about my gear and lighting. I've been testing out the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens, and am very happy with the results so far. Will know for sure if this will be my next lens purchase after I run it through a few other different concert situations.

So that's that. Sorry for the abundance of music photography lately...I know that's not really everyone's thing. Unfortunately, this is almost what I've been shooting exclusively for the past while, so it's this or no update!

Saw UK's Editors on a sweaty, sticky evening last week at the Opera House. Apparently that was also the night of the crazy thunderstorm, which I'm very happy I missed (due to the concert), since lightning scares me to the point of needing medication. Anyway, back to Editors...great show. I had a good time shooting it, particularly the singer. He was energetic and entertaining, and the music took the sweltering heat off the fans' minds. I love shooting at the Opera House...they always have amazing lighting.

The camera on my Nokia 6682 (full disclosure - yes, I got this phone for free through that blogger seeding program) seems to be hit and miss in terms of photo quality. Mostly miss. This is the first time I've used a camera phone, though, so I really don't know what to expect in terms of image quality. This is by far one of the better ones I've shot, and I've tested it in night mode, concert lighting, bright sun and overcast skies. Overcast wins by a mile. That said, this ain't supposed to be no DSLR!

This was taken back in June, during NXNE. The guitarist for State of Shock was bent down checking his guitar pedals or something, and I liked the light that was falling on him, particularly his mohawk. Wish I'd have composed it a little better, though.

Metric @ Dog Day Afternoon

This past Saturday I shot the bands playing the Dog Day Afternoon festival, which was headlined (and spearheaded) by Metric. It was a scorching hot day with very little shade, so fans were quite subdued for most of the day. However, enthusiasm rose when Metric hit the stage, and it was clear that this was who everyone was there for.

I'm actually quite disappointed with my Metric set. They were noisier than usual and the lighting was tough to deal with. There's nothing worse than being excited to edit what look like good photos on the lcd, only to find out they're not that great on the computer. Next time!

Alexisonfire headlined the S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival last Sunday in St. Catharines. There were over 120 bands and 13 venues to cover in one day. Needless to say, it was crazy running around trying to shoot as much as possible.

I've shot a number of festivals in Toronto, but none in a small town. Big difference. Everyone was so much friendlier and cooperative at this festival, and the bands were quite accessible.

Still having issues staying connected to the net. I'm hoping they'll get fixed soon, as it's frustrating not being able to keep up with everything. Hopefully I can get back onto a regular schedule here shortly.

Sai and I met up with Mika to hang out and do some shooting a few days ago. I shoot people all the times, but this was the first time with a model...and one who really didn't need a lot of direction, at that. Sai showed me a few different ways to light a scene, using only a softbox and grid, and now I feel much less intimidated with the fact that set ups don't necessarily have to be elaborate and involved a bunch of lighting and reflectors.

I'm still editing some shots, but there is a set up on Flickr, if you want to see more.

I'm a little late on this one, but on July 1st Delineated.com turned 2! Time flies!

What's interesting to me is going back to the photos that I first posted here and seeing how things have progressed over this time. Admittedly, I look at some of the photos and cringe, thinking, well, 'what was I thinking?!' But I guess that was the whole point of starting Delineated in the first place...to document my progression.

I've been a bit quiet lately, but been keeping quite busy with photography stuff. Most of what I've been shooting for the past month or so is music-related, and I don't want to bore everyone with music photos everyday. However, if you really want to see them, some are posted on my Flickr account.

Etta James performed at the Hummingbird Centre on Tuesday night, as part of the Downtown Jazz Fest. We were alloted one song to shoot, and it was a tough one. We were stuck to the far side of the stage (major zoom required...for reference this is the equivalent of 456mm), the crowd was standing in our way (I shot this between two heads), and Etta mostly faced the other way, with the mic stand going across her face. It was frustrating, to say the least. I was very lucky to get a few shots that worked, although they're boring.

This was taken Friday night on an impromptu ride up to Richmond Hill (and wherever else we went...I have no idea). Sai and I invaded a teen hangout to shoot the lake, and this kid was sitting at the end of the dock alone, while his friends were goofing around. He didn't know I was photographing him.

Processing night shots is tough because of the whacked out colours of the ambient light. I tried a few different treatments on 3 different files. The others can be found here and here. Which version do you prefer?

Members of Toronto's Korean community were out in full force yesterday afternoon, after Korea tied France 1-1 in the FIFA World Cup. Bloor Street traffic was almost at a standstill, and I didn't fully understand why everyone was so crazy over a tie until I learned that this put Korea into the round of 16.

Personally, I still haven't watched a World Cup game (I know, the horror, the horror). However, now that hockey is over (poor Oilers), I may try to get into it a bit more. Who are you cheering for?

Taken on the way home from shooting the shot from yesterday's entry. I have a habit of always sticking my hand out car windows if they're open. I can't help myself. Apparently it drives a certain person crazy, because he can't see out the side mirror, so I bring my hand back into the car...only to have it hanging out again one minute later.

Caught Robin Black at the Bovine Sex Club as part of NXNE on Friday night. I'd never seen him live before...man is he fun to photograph. Very entertaining.

I've been shooting a lot of the festival (on assignment) and it's been a blast. The quality of the music I've checked out has been phenomenal, for the most part. Don't be surprised if it's mostly live music shots here for the next little while. I haven't had much of a chance to shoot anything else lately.

Did anyone else catch any NXNE shows? If so, what were your highlights? I'll be posting mine in the days to come.

Radiohead @ Hummingbird Centre

Saw Radiohead last night at the Hummingbird Centre. I hadn't been so excited to see a show in a very long time (not even U2...seriously), and it kind of awoke my love for live music again. I always have loved live music, but I find it takes a lot to get me truly excited these days. I got goosebumps when Radiohead walked on stage. Great show, even though the acoustics were slightly muffled.

Unfortunately, I was way up in the balcony, so didn't quite get to shoot the way I wanted to (and the lighting was very tough), but I guess I have to live with the fact that I can't always be up in the front, huh. ;)

I've been a little uninspired to shoot lately, so I dug into the archives to edit some old shots. Glad I did, because I found a pile of photos of my niece from Christmas 2004 that I hadn't edited.

I like this photo because it can be interpreted in different ways...typical little girl playing dress up and also a statement on how young girls are these days when they start learning about body image. I still think my niece is a little young to understand that, but it's sort of a dramatization of it.

Leonard Cohen graced us with his presence outside Indigo Books on Saturday afternoon, which closed off a portion of Bay Street to accomodate the thousands of fans who showed up. It was really interesting to watch him crouching in the corner of the stage, singing along to his partner, Anjani's, performance. He looked so small and simple. He then accompanied Anjani on a few songs, and treated us to a jam session with Ron Sexsmith and the Barenaked Ladies. Awesome way to spend an afternoon.

I love the "street" names over on Ward's Island. I say street in quotes because you actually can't drive there, which makes the visit over to the island that much more enjoyable.

There are some things in life that I'd never think I'd be photographing, and Dionne Warwick is one of those things. I shot her at an event I was working at last November. It was strange...one minute I was standing up against the stage alone, with the guests in their tuxes and gowns sitting at their tables, and the next minute I turned around and it was a complete mob scene behind me. You'd think it was a Stones concert or something.

Nikon was a sponsor of the event, and nobody told me until I got there that I would be shooting with a D100 all night. It's a good thing I'm a quick learner, because I'm a Canon girl, and had never used the D100 before.

Sai and I went to High Park yesterday to enjoy the gorgeous weather and to check out the cherry blossom trees in bloom. If you're in Toronto and plan to go see the trees, you might want to do it within the next few days, as I hear they won't be in bloom much longer. I only wish the light wasn't so harsh when we went...

I'm so happy that it's warmed up over the past few weeks...I don't think I could take much more of the cold weather!

Went to the Exclaim! Hockey Hootenanny at Lee's Palace on Thursday and Friday, as part of the annual Exclaim! Hockey Summit. Basically, each team has about 15mins. on stage to do whatever they choose. This was the Halifax/Dartmouth Ferries onstage. All I have to say is this singer is a photographer's dream to shoot...he was insanely animated and I didn't want to take my camera off of him, even though Chris Murphy (of Sloan - who I love) was onstage with him.

Afterwards, I asked Chris about the singer and he said his name is Steve Rolston from a Halifax band called King Konqueror. If this band ever comes to town, I'm going to the show. I wish I could've gotten a better shot with his face in it, but by the time I'd hit the shutter on this one I was already soaked.

I wish I'd have posted this yesterday instead of today, to keep the two ground glass shots in order...oh well. This is Jerrold and 6oh (Michael) standing around while I worked hard to get some shots. ;)

As an aside, I've been noticing an interesting trend lately. Photos that seem to get a lot of attention on Flickr barely even get noticed on the photoblog, and vice versa. Seems that the crowds are very different. For example, yesterday's photo was faved quite a bit on Flickr, yet only one comment here. I'm definitely not fishing for comments, I just thought it was an interesting observation. Anyone else with a Flickr account notice a similarity?

Last night, newmindspace held a subway party, which started at 11:10pm at Finch Station. Interesting time to be had, for sure. The party made it to St. George station before being broken up by the TTC (who, btw, were there at the beginning for the sendoff), but that didn't break the spirit of many who hopped right back on 15mins. later and continued the party back around the Yonge line. It was very tough shooting on a moving train with bodies all over the place.

I recently tried shooting slide and cross processing for the first time. I shot 3 consecutive rolls -- two rolls of Fuji Sensia 100 and one roll of Kodak EliteChrome 100. Both brands came out with similar hues, although apparently the Fuji was supposed to be more red in tone. I really liked the results (which will make their way here or to Flickr over the next few days), and will play around some more with it.

Canon Elan 2, 16mm fisheye lens, f/4 (I believe), Fuji Sensia 100. Unsure of exposure time.

On Thursday Sai and I decided to go shooting...we were driving down some country highway when we see this telephone booth and coke machine standing in the middle of nowhere all by themselves. Sai and I both see them, look at each other, then he slams on the brakes and starts reversing down the highway so we could shoot them.

Stars @ Indie Awards

Despite the fact that the Stars were headlining the show, they went home from the Indie Awards empty handed during Canadian Music Week. As a consolation prize, one of the other bands presented the trophy above, which apparently makes a very useful guitar accessory.

Digging into the archive for the sake of updating. I took this back in January at Sneaky Dee's.

CMW ended up being quite busy. I shot 1600+ photos of 39 bands at 14 venues (many venues I bounced around to more than once), in 4 days. The 4am nights caught up with me and I'm now sick again. But for the most part it was a lot of fun. The highlight for me was definitely the Stars show after the Indie Awards. They were great.

I'm finally getting around to scanning more photos from my trip to Europe in 2003. I shot all film and getting a scanned disc from the lab wasn't cheap then, so I've put off this painful task for quite some time.

Some of you may have already heard this story...

This was taken on May 17, 2003 at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. It was my very first day in Ireland and I just happened to randomly walk by the theatre, so I stopped at the box office and asked if they had any spare tickets. To my extreme surprise, they were releasing about 10 tickets a few hours later. I stood first in line and waited patiently for those hours, and was rewarded with a ticket. At the beginning of Radiohead's set, I was also rewarded by a security guy who asked me if I wanted a wristband to stand in the front row. What a show. Not only that, I was lucky enough to meet Bono that night (and have him kiss me!). Only in Ireland...

Feeling much better and being much more productive than I have in days. I think I might've had some sort of virus...not fun. It's been awful being cooped up at home, unable to shoot!

I've gotten back into shooting film lately. Feels good. Feels...solid. However, I'm going through film like crazy. Last time I was out I managed to shoot 72 exposures in a matter of an hour or so. Guess I was a little excited, huh?

I also took a shot of this ship with my lomo, but it didn't turn out very well (I somehow mangled the film during the rewind). I liked the feel of it though, so I tried to replicate it with the digital shot I took, then cropped to square. 14 Exposures In One

My Lomo LC-A screwed up on me and ended up not advancing properly after about the 10th exposure, so when I got the film developed, I ended up with this shot, which is a combination of about 14 exposures in one. I'm pretty impressed it's not blown out, and have looked at it very closely to pick out all of the layers. Kinda weird that I shot so many 'open' neon signs...must be getting influenced by Jonah's neon lust. :P

I've had my Lomo LC-A camera for about a year and a half now and have only run one roll through it previous to this weekend. Brought it out to play with some dollar store "Likon" 200ISO film (gotta love the name brand), and was surprisingly happy with the results. I am itching to play with this camera more and will definitely be giving my Canon 300D a little more rest from now on.

This is straight from the camera (no processing, aside from resizing).

Rannie and I took a drive out to the Badlands near Brampton yesterday afternoon to see what the area looked like in winter. Bad idea. Fabulously warm day, but the ground was mush and I foolishly wore white shoes. Red dirt + white shoes = disaster. We didn't stay long.

Accidental long exposure (1.3sec) at 1600ISO, taken at the same time as the previous photo. Probably won't appeal to anyone else, but there's something I really like about it.

What isn't an accident is that the last little while I've really been enjoying what I see when I deliberately shoot at 800/1600ISO. The feel is completely different. I'll post some of those high ISO shots in the coming days.

Braved the cold yesterday to do some random street photography. Didn't realize until I'd taken half of my shots that my camera was set to 1600ISO in broad daylight (a friend used my camera and I should've known better to check the settings after). However, I kinda like the way some of the shots turned out. With the 'feel' of the shot, I felt it worked better as a square.

I just realized that I never posted this. It's from a camping trip to Kearney Lake in Algonquin Park back in August.

My camera data says the time was <1024sec., but I have no idea of the exact time or why the data would show up like that. I know it was pitch black outside, but definitely didn't take 17mins. to expose!

Saw Luke Doucet last night at the Rivoli...completely last minute. Didn't know he was even playing until he was practically onstage. Left a party to go to the show, and it was well worth it. I've seen Luke about 4 times in the past year or so, and he never fails to impress.

I never play around with ISO 800 and 1600 on my camera, but decided to last night just for the fun of it. I really like the way these shots turned out...will have to play around with these settings more. I've always been quite disappointed with ISO400 on my camera, so I was shocked that the higher ISOs worked well .

Okay, seriously, I followed the instructions exactly. I did everything right. How did this happen??! Sigh. How can you screw up FOUR ingredients -- flour, icing sugar, corn starch and butter?!! See, this is why I avoid my kitchen.

I love visiting Soma Chocolates in the Distillery District. It always smells amazing and their display of chocolate is nothing short of mouthwatering. If you're in Toronto and have never had this, I suggest you try their Mayan hot chocolate. It's a little on the expensive side, but worth every penny...it's happiness in a cup!

Another shot from the lighting session on Thursday. I really like the DOF here and the natural vignetting.

I've been editing photos from this series for the past few days and am loving the results from the Canon 5D more and more. Must. get. this. camera! I love having the option to shoot in b&w mode, then convert back to colour in processing if I want. And the dynamic range is awesome.

Last night I had the opportunity to play around with the Canon 5D, along with some lighting, thanks to my friend William. I am so in love with that camera. It was almost dangerous for me to try it because there's nothing worse than knowing you're eating a hamburger while someone else is having filet mignon. Yummy, full frame goodness!

I've always wanted to shoot the Terminal Barber Shop (Bay St. & Dundas St., Toronto), but was told by someone that the owner won't let anyone. Last night Sai and I happened to be walking by there at 2:20am (according to the clock on the wall), so I shot it through the window. It's blurry, but I think it works here...and the colours are what I got in-camera, and give it a nostalgic feel.

More night shooting last night with Sai. This time we wandered around the St. Clair Reservoir for awhile until around 2:30am.

Encountered some large unidentifiable animal...at first I thought it was a deer, because it stood completely still, staring at me, but then I realized it had a long tail. It wasn't a dog, either. I have no clue what it was. Better than the near run-in with a raccoon down at Humber last week, though!

This was taken a few weeks ago at the Cloud Garden during one of Rannie's 'Portraits in the Park' sessions. I shot it through his Yashica Mat using my 50mm lens on the 300D. I really like how these shots turn out...may have to play a bit more with this sort of thing (hi Rannie!).

I cannot tell you how much I love this photo. Really. LOVE IT. As much as I miss my DSLR, the point and shoot is getting some decent shots.

Concert #2 - was in the ellipse, almost directly in front of The Edge and directly beside Daniel Lanois, Michael Stipe and Chris, the singer from Dashboard Confessional (who has one hell of a wicked smile, I might add). Meeting Daniel Lanois was incredible...he's such an amazing talent and I was completely humbled.

The show itself wasn't as good as Monday night, but the experience was much better. I have seats for the last 2 shows and really don't know if I want to go...I know I sound like a spoiled brat, but going from GAs in front of the stage to seats is like going from filet mignon to hamburgers. I may have to somehow get GAs, even if I have to pay through the nose for them.

Last night's U2 concert at the ACC was...WOW. That's the only way to describe it. I don't know how they're going to top it, really.

This is Bono's hand...he laid down on the catwalk right in front of me. In fact, he spent much of the evening singing right in front of my face, which was wicked, considering I didn't manage to get into the ellipse.

I was worried about the crappy quality of my Canon A80, but it turned out not to be so bad. I have a TON of photos on Flickr right now, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I'll be adding a lot more in the coming days...

Bono @ 'Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man' Premiere

On Sunday night, I went to the premiere of 'Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man' and Bono happened to be there (okay, I knew ahead of time that he would be). Sai and I managed to score front row seats, which was awesome for taking photos during Bono's pre-screening speech. This particular shot was actually taken outside of the theatre. On the left side of the shot is a poster of Leonard Cohen.

I can't say I've ever been a big fan of Cohen, as I barely know his music, but after seeing the documentary tonight I came out of the theatre very intrigued and wanting to listen to more. He's a very endearing man.

This week is going to be insane. I'll be attending 4 U2 shows and a Pearl Jam show, so if you see sparse posting (okay, admittedly, it's already been sparse lately), that's why. And if you see a ton of U2 stuff in the next little while, don't say you weren't warned!

Everytime I visit Myla Kent's Flickr stream and see her smoke photos, I'm always awed at how beautiful they are. I finally decided that I needed to try this myself, so spent quite a bit of yesterday afternoon inhaling nasty incense and attempting to create something interesting. I recently got a new computer and am now able to scan my photos again (my USB ports were fried on the old PC). This is a shot of Carrie Sr. from the first studio shoot I ever did. Truth be told, I had no clue what I was doing at the time, and over/underexposed almost every shot I took. We were instructed to shoot everything manually, and I didn't own a light meter at the time.

It was also one of the first few rolls of film that I developed myself. Makes me miss being in the darkroom!

Was out doing some early night shooting with Rannie about a month back. It was the first time we'd gone out shooting in quite awhile, and it seemed everywhere we turned, we both ooh'd and aah'd at the same subjects, except I was all about the vertical composition and he was all about the horizontal.

Here's Rannie's take on this shot. Lucky for him, he had a tripod to use...mine is handheld.

On our way back from the Badlands a few weeks back, Rannie, Taku and I came upon St. Elias Church, just outside of Brampton, Ontario. It's a Ukrainian Catholic church made mainly of wood, and completely lit by natural light or candles (on the main floor, at least).

We were welcomed into the church to look around and stay for the first prayer of their 7pm service, with the promise that we wouldn't regret sticking around. We weren't disappointed. The music was amazing, and matched with the smell of the wood and the open concept of the church (no pews), it was a great experience. Everyone was so friendly and inviting, taking time to say hello, which is a very different from most churches I've visited where I've felt completely out of place.

If you're ever out in the area, I'd highly recommend stopping by for a few moments.

Went to do some night shooting at Ashbridges Bay last night at around 2am with Sai.� We were both going for the tree/moon shot, but I like the human aspect of this shot.�

We went back down to the beach around 5am to shoot sunrise shots...some of which will probably appear here in the near future.

I think I finally got some motivation back.� It's been a really uninspiring few weeks, and I'm glad I feel like shooting again.�� Being on vacation this week will hopefully help get me back on track, as well.

July 1st was the one year mark of my photoblog. One year! It feels like I started this thing just months ago. Time flies.

Happy belated Canada Day! I was in our nation's capital (that would be Ottawa, not Toronto) for five days, hence the reason for no updates lately. Canada Day on Parliament Hill was insane! People everywhere, wearing more maple leafs than I've seen in my life. If you've never been to Ottawa for Canada Day, you should definitely go.

The day after, my friends and I had a marathon date with the television. In between naps, we watched about 15 hours of Live 8 coverage. Highlights of the show for me were U2 and Paul McCartney singing 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', Pink Floyd, The Tragically Hip (only because Gord Downie was insane), and Neil Young & the other Barrie performers doing 'Rockin' in the Free World.' Cool personal moment was seeing Steven Page wearing my ONE bracelet onstage.

Today's photo is fitting for all of the above reasons, even though it's not the most exciting shot ever. Heading back to New York this upcoming weekend, so hopefully I'll be motivated to start taking new photos...it's been an uninspirational past few weeks.

Saw Steven Page (from the Barenaked Ladies) on Friday night at The Drake. He was performing a private show for his new album called 'The Vanity Project'. It was a fairly short set, but pretty good. His voice is so distinct, though, that I don't think I'd be able to separate his solo stuff from BNL.

After the show, we traded bracelets...I took the one on his wrist, which is for makepovertyhistory.ca, and he took mine for the ONE Campaign. Same cause, different campaign names. I have a bunch of ONE bracelets at home, but didn't have the Canadian version.

Lighting was terrible, so I couldn't get many good shots...most turned out slightly blurry.

Went camping in the Muskokas this weekend with a bunch of friends. Sunday afternoon, Gabe (who's campground we stayed at), took us to these 65ft. cliffs you can jump from. The guy in this photo was pretty amusing (ie. insane), trying all of these crazy dives and jumps.

I wish the guy was a bit clearer, but his positioning was too good not to post.

On Sunday, I stumbled upon the celebration of Sikh Khalsa Day at Nathan Philips Square. The place was packed with more vibrant colours than a photographer can handle. I don't think I've been in an environment jam-packed with so many people that were quite happy and outwardly friendly.

It's really too bad that the agendas of the various political parties had to interfere. I just caught the tale end of Paul Martin's speech, and was too busy (unsuccessfully) maneuvering for photo ops, so didn't hear what he said. Next came Dalton McGuinty (middle left), who wasn't too bad. Then came Stephen Harper (middle right), the evil one. Ranting on about same-sex marriage and how the Conservatives are the only true friends of the Sikh community, etc. At this point I was right up against the barrier in front of the stage, and if it hadn't been such a happy, peaceful crowd, I would've heckled him. And I'm not a heckler. I was livid. Apparently after he left the stage, the crowd was addressed in Punjabi and asked to concentrate on the unity of the day, and not politics. Of course, this is what I heard third-party, since I don't speak Punjabi, and I could've gotten the whole thing wrong.

Anyway, great day. Happy that the rain held off, allowing me to wander the city a bit.

Last Sunday, while heading to Union Station, I was caught up on Bay St. during a film shoot. They were continually spraying the street and sidewalk...I'm assuming it was to reflect more light into the area, since the shoot was sandwiched between two skyscrapers.

I found out that the made-for-TV movie is going to be called Ambition, and it will be "the story of Donald Trump", according to one of the crew. Isn't this overkill? This guy is everywhere.

If you're looking for chairs at Whitby, you'll hit the jackpot in the big, modern building on the corner as you're going in (I'm directionally challenged at the moment, so that's as good a description as you'll get). Chairs everywhere you turn. This one was in the courtyard in the middle of the building.

Visited the abandoned Whitby Psychiatric facilities on Saturday morning with Natalie and Scott (of no fixed website address). This was by far my most productive trip out there. The lighting was great and I came away with many shots that I'm happy with.

This was my last shot of the day. I have not boosted the saturation at all...in fact, I've slightly desaturated the yellow. I really like the feel of it, it feels very lomo-ish. And even though the place is abandoned, something about this giant tree gives the place hope. To me, at least.

Construction Season Has Begun

This guy was repairing holes in the wall of College Park the other day. And this morning on my street, guys were turning tree branches into mulch. Just the beginning of construction season in T.O.

I really wish I'd have had my digital rebel on me for this shot. You can really see the difference in quality between the SLR and point & shoot. The other day was the first time I'd used my p&s in ages...I needed it to photograph clues for my multi-sport league's version of the 'amazing race', which counted as our playoffs.

We had some rather wacky weather in Toronto this weekend. Friday was beautiful, then Saturday was miserable with snow, rain and hail. Sunday wasn't much better than Saturday, but then the beautiful weather returned on Monday. Go figure...weather gets nice when we're all cooped up in our offices.

This is Michael, a resident of Ward's Island since 1952. I was walking by his place on the weekend and he stopped me to ask about my digital camera, as he is looking to buy one. We talked for a while about various photography things, as well as about how he has watched the city grow from a sprinkling of buildings amongst the Royal York Hotel to the monstrosity it is today.

Michael then showed me some of the 16"x24" photos he took of various landmarks and scenery, with his 30 year old Pentax. The photos were gorgeous, and he took such care in describing how he shot each one of them, gently running his fingers over different areas of the paper.

I really wanted to take a close-up portrait shot of his face, but when I asked to take his photo, he stood proudly in front of his home (which he is renovating), waiting for the shutter to go off. I have the heart to pester him by asking for another one.

Some of the areas in the photo are a bit blown out, but meh, I wasn't going to let that prevent me from posting it as a memory.

Spent all last Sunday wandering around Ward's Island on my own. Who knew it could be so peaceful with the city just a stone's throw away? I didn't see a single person for a good hour or so.

I decided to wait until dusk before I took the ferry back so I could shoot the cliched harbourfront shot. The sky was gorgeous, though, so I couldn't resist.

Farmers Protest at Queen's Park

Today hundreds of tractors descended on Queen's Park in downtown Toronto to protest a number of issues concerning the economic conditions of the farming community. It was quite interesting watching the procession of tractors driving right past my office window, down a major road in the city. Of course I couldn't miss out on the action and ran down there.

About five minutes after I left the scene, a man in a rental van doused himself in gasoline and threatened to light himself on fire, all while being surrounded by several police cruisers. He then rammed the van into a few cruisers, managed to be lit on fire, and then was pulled from the van by fire fighters and rushed to hospital.

If only I'd stayed around a few minutes longer!

This is Bob Snider, a folk singer I had the pleasure of meeting in Kensington Market a few weekends ago. Unbeknownst to me at the time I took the photo, he is regarded as a "living legend" by some Canadian musicians.

Since mentioning his name, I've had no less than four people tell me how great his folk music is. I'd have to agree...as little of the music I heard the day I met him, he was an instant attention grabber, with his almost spoken lyrics and easygoing nature. I should've picked up one of the CDs he was selling while busking.

You just never know who you'll randomly meet on the streets.

I desaturated all but the red and yellow and sharpened a bit. The original background was a nice blue that made the clementines pop...it looked great, but I liked this version a bit more.

On Sunday morning, Irina and I explored the abandoned Don Valley Brickworks. We spent about 3 hours or so wandering around this space, photographing the light beams coming through the holes in the roof, along with whatever else we found.

This shot wasn't actually supposed to turn out this way. I set the timer, ran like hell and sat down, then thought I heard the shutter go off, so I stood up. Then I heard the real click. In any case, it was a happy accident.

Red-Orange Glow

Another foggy night shot from Ashbridges Bay. There was a single orange light in the area, which produced this effect.

I found it extremely hard to focus with such low levels of light, and basically crossed my fingers that the shots would turn out. This one isn't quite as sharp as I'd hope it to be, but could be worse. Anyone have tips on how to get sharp focus in low light situations?

On Saturday night, Adam was gracious enough to accompany me on a night shooting trip to Ashbridges Bay. We wandered around for what felt like ages, taking various timed shots. Our last destination was this place, basically a big ice cliff at what felt like the end of the world. It was a pretty sizeable drop on the other side of that ice, and the dense wall of fog made being up there quite creepy.

The crazy purple-blue colour comes from setting my camera on custom white balance. I was going to adjust it so it looked a little more "normal", but this is pretty freaky, so I left it as is. You can see one of Adam's here. His turned out blue, as well.

I know it's the dead of winter when all I can think about is travel, travel, travel. Sometimes I really think it's the only thing that gets me through this crappy weather.

I'm *this close* to booking another trip to Europe, but wouldn't be able to go until later in the year. I've just booked a trip to New York, but that's not 'til May. Montreal at the end of March, perhaps. Cuba would be nice (but no resorts, please)...I'd like to go before Castro kicks the bucket.

Until then, I'll just have to keep dreaming up trips that I probably won't take, just so I don't have to deal with the winter blahs.

I met this Irishman while on a tour of the Ring of Kerry in May '03. He sat on the bench, playing his accordion, seeming to not have a care in the world. I asked if I could play accordion with him; he obliged and attempted to show me how to play. I couldn't make a solid sound to save my life, but he didn't care; he was patient and kind, and probably would've let me sit there all day.

To this day, I get sentimental when I see this photo. Something about his character reminds me of my Grandfather, who I don't get to see very often. Meeting him is still one of my most vivid memories of my short time in Ireland. I wish I'd have asked him his name. I hope he's doing well.

While in Montreal, I happened to catch Jimmy Eat World at The Spectrum with Rannie and Jay.

I have to say, they probably had the best concert lighting set up I've ever seen at any show, which made taking photos quite enjoyable.

Aunt Carrie, Are We Done Yet?

This is my niece, Karisa. She wanted to play dress-up and have me photograph her, so she could look at herself on the LCD screen after each photo. After about 15 minutes, she gave me this expression and proclaimed, "That's it! I've had enough!!"

I'm not posting a photo today, it just doesn't feel right and wouldn't be appropriate given what I want to write about.

Top Eleven

Since everyone and their next door neighbours are posting their Top Tens of 2004, I thought I'd add one more and post my 'Top Eleven Albums of 2004...That I Own'. There was some really great music that came out this year. I probably bought more in '04 than any other year and I'm still working on making more CD purchases. I bought many more than the ones pictured above, but those are the discs that received the most play.

You might wonder why there are only ten CDs...I didn't realize until after I took the photo that The Killers CD was missing. Doh! Also, the Danny Michel CD didn't come out this year, but I included it since I just discovered him recently. I also cheated a bit by including a soundtrack...but it's so good!

These are not piled in any particular order...if I were to list them in order of favourite, Franz Ferdinand would come out on top, with U2 following closely behind and the rest coming in third equally.

I haven't had time to go out shooting much over the past week or so, therefore you get an archive image from September. This was shot at Ontario Place during the CNE. I was going to post something festive, but wasn't feeling it.

When I saw the yellow spotlight, I had a very particular shot in mind. I waited and waited for a lone person to skate slowly into the perfect spot to take this. I wish it was a little sharper, but hey, I wasn't going to wait another half hour for someone to skate into that spot again.

Ode To Davisville

Last night I went to the Spacing Magazine Issue 3 release party at the El Mocambo. They had these cute little buttons that you could pick up, with all of the TTC subway station tile designs -- well, all except for Davisville. I felt sorry for my subway station, so I am giving it props here.

As for the magazine issue, there is an article by Rannie featuring various photographers around the city. There is also a Spacing photoblog set up, which will showcase photographs from a different Toronto photographer each day during the month of December. I'm not sure which day my photo will be up, but keep your eyes open for it here:

Rannie and I bought these little gumball machine Simpson's bobblehead toys at a rest stop just before getting into Montreal. No matter which way you turned their heads, they always managed to turn back towards the road within seconds, as though they were leading the way. Unfortunately, they didn't do the greatest job, as we ended up taking the "scenic" route into the city.

I'm pretty sure Rannie still has these glued to his dashboard.

I know the quality of this photo is somewhat crap (and I purposely made it a bit crappier), but it was such a pain to focus on them, since their heads were continually vibrating. However, I was determined that I'd post one of these shots!

You know winter is here and there's no turning back when the skating rink is ready for use at Nathan Philips Square. I'm not one for ice skating (unless it involves a puck and a stick), but I sure do like watching people wipe out.

At first, I had my mouth hanging wide open in awe at the vast number of them, but then I thought better of it because the odds of being carpet-bombed by crap were pretty darn high. Went to the Biodome in anticipation of visiting with the penguins, only to find them enclosed in glass. What a disappointment! They were still cute and entertaining, however, with their little waddles and hops.

Beyond Logos

Last Tuesday night, I attended a talk at U. of T. given by Naomi Klein, author of No Logo. Originally, she was going to speak about the current economy in Iraq, but given the recent attacks in Falluja, she decided to set her written speech aside and speak about that instead.

It was a very interesting talk and I found myself shaking my head at the senselessness and corruptness of this war. It was refreshing to hear someone speak, who had a first hand experience seeing this devastation, without sensationalizing her findings (a la Michael Moore).

This photo isn't the greatest, but given where I was sitting and the fact that the place was packed, I only took 2 shots because I didn't want to annoy anyone.

Bono, Is That You?

No, this is not U2. This is October, a Toronto-based U2 tribute band. I saw them play for the first time on Thursday, and although I intended to take only a few photos, I ended up having so much fun shooting this band that by the end of the night I had over 300 shots. I had a very difficult time editing which photos I would post, because I liked so many of them. They were very entertaining and the singer, Gabriel, sometimes has this eerie resemblance to a younger Bono when he's singing certain songs or making certain gestures. The top photo is almost scary!

A very special thank you to Jorge Chaves for lending me his extra battery pack for my camera when mine died. :)

If you're a U2 fan and want to be entertained, October play in Toronto quite frequently, and will be at Fionn McCool's (Esplanade location) on Friday, Nov. 12th.

It was threatening to rain the day Rannie, Natalie and I went to the CNE, back in September. Lucky for us the weather remained fairly nice, which allowed us to spend an entire day photographing everything.� We needed to take a break from the midway rides and games, so we headed to Ontario Place, where I took this photo from the roof of a building.

That yellow tone you see in the lower portion of the photo? Smog. Sad, eh?

Feeling Weathered

I couldn't update yesterday. I needed time to cool down or I likely would've spewed a lot of very bitter four letter words.

That said, I do have to say that as irate as I was, I am now, like others, truly disappointed in the outcome of the U.S. elections. I can't understand how Bush could be re-elected after all that has happened over the past four years. I just can't wrap my head around it. I'm raging mad, confused, sad, and generally feeling really bad for the 49% of the U.S. who tried so hard for change.

Like the photo above, Bush can paint a pretty picture for the new term, but it won't take long before we'll see the new promises fade away to reveal the cracks and deterioration below. For those of you who voted Republican, I really hope you can stand behind that vote for the entire four years and live with your decision. Oh, and congratulations! You won't be attending a gay wedding anytime soon, but you'll certainly be witnessing the nuptials of church and state. The invitation is in the mail - hope you're happy.

As this site is not meant to be a political forum, I will leave it at that and never bring this election up here again. However, I wouldn't be true to myself if I didn't at least somewhat express how I was feeling. I spared you the long version! ;)

Halloween on Church

He was dressed as Ronald McDonald. I suggested he give me the cheesy Ronald smile; he gave me this creepy Pennywise look instead. I'm sure this is how Ronald really feels most days. Submission to Lensday for "Spooky"...as all clowns are.

He was a very sweet boy. I think this is my favourite photo, simply because of the facial expression.

I had no idea this was a girl while I was taking her photo. It was only until I was finished and she talked that I realised it. Great costume!

It was nice, I couldn't help it. And yes, I purposely gave the photo an "angelic" blur.

Any woman would die for lashes this long. Okay, maybe not this long, but well...

Last night I made myself use only the 50mm lens, and didn't use any flash, since I didn't bring it with me and the on-camera flash would've drowned everyone out. Some of the shots turned out slightly more yellow toned than I wished, but oh well, I'll know better for next time.

I'm loving the new camera so far...so much more I can do with it than my A80. I think part of it is the new 50mm lens, as well.

Halloween @ Work

These are all from Friday afternoon at work, during our Halloween party. A lot of people got into the spirit of things by dressing up and decorating their offices. I, however, was not one of them. Boooooo! The top photo is of the Best Costume winner, Linda. She was creepy. The bottom photo is of my boss's mask. I really loved the colours, so I oversaturated the photo a bit.

I'll have plenty more Halloween photos to come...Rannie, Jay, Carla and I hit the big block party on Church Street last night, where many really great costumes were found. I haven't downloaded them yet, so you'll have to wait 'til tomorrow.

A Job For Someone Braver Than I

Just after I bought my 300mm lens in August, I was walking up Yonge St. towards Eglinton and saw this window washer hanging from the Canadian Tire building, about 25 floors up.

I finally developed the 9 rolls of colour film that have been gathering dust over the past few months. Am pretty disappointed with most of the photos, but am glad this one turned out.

I See Sheep, What Do YOU See?

I noticed these clouds on the walk to my photography class, back in September. I thought they were the strangest clouds I'd ever seen, like thousands of little sheep dancing in the sky. I later heard that these clouds were remnants of one of the hurricanes (can't remember which one) that happened the week before.

Actually, upon closer inspection, I can see the forms of many different animals. Neat.

4 Steps To A Perfect Crepe

These shots were taken on Saturday night through the windows of the crepe place (don't know the name of it) on Queen St. W., across from Much Music. I know a few are a bit blurry (not referring to the motion), but they worked so well as a series, I decided to use them anyway.

I'm really impressed with the low noise in the new camera so far. I could've never taken such noise-free photos with my Canon A80 in the same conditions. In fact, I've barely even post-processed any of the DRebel photos at all.

This entry technically makes it 100 photos posted, although not 100 entries. It seems like I just started this site a few weeks ago! Where has the time gone?!

Car Wins By A Nose

I used my new Canon Digital Rebel last night for the first time, and decided that was as good a time as any to start experimenting. I'd never really done much panning previous to this because a) film is not cheap to experiment this technique with, and b) my Canon A80 has a bit of a delay after hitting the shutter button, so doesn't work very well.

I must've screwed up about 30 shots before getting this one and one other I liked. I'm going to chalk this up to dumb luck, because I certainly haven't mastered panning in one night. I really love how this turned out. I can't center the shots yet to save my life (however, I like the skater's positioning here), but Rome wasn't built in a day, right?

Basement Skylight

This was shot in the basement of the kitchen building at the Whitby Psych facility.

I'm actually really surprised at how well it turned out, considering it was shot handheld at 1/30 sec. with my light-as-air digital -- in a dank basement, no less.

Last night at Ryerson I developed five rolls of black & white from the Whitby trips, so hopefully I can find some time to go through them. Let me know if you're getting sick of these yet!

So, I could only make one of the purchases I was alluding to in my last entry. I finally picked up a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II prime lens. The other purchase was out of stock, so I guess that'll have to wait 'til Friday. And then no more camera equipment for a while! This hobby is sucking every coin out of me. Not that I'm complaining, really.

I actually shot these the first time I went and they came out blurry, so I was determined to get some decent shots of them yesterday. I have to say, this is now my very favourite photo on my site. I can't even fully explain why, I just love it. It reminds me of eastern Europe, for some odd reason. I can picture two older men sitting in them, chatting, watching the world go by.

The photo is a little too noisy for my liking, but I started to lose detail when I tried to get rid of it. Downfall of digital, I suppose.

Is That A Charmin' Double Roll?

Yes, I know, not the most pleasant sight in the world, but this was one of the washrooms in the nursery building at the abandoned Whitby Psych facility. What I find funny is that this campus has been defunct for years, and yet there's a fairly "fresh" roll of toilet paper on the holder. Must be a double roll. ;)

I didn't take this photo so much for the subject, but really liked the way the room was lit. I also like how there's a slight bit of vignetting in the corners, and upped the contrast a tad to make it slightly more pronounced.

This is one of the locker rooms in the bowling alley/auditorium building at the abandoned Whitby Psychiatric facility. Compared to the other locker rooms/washrooms I saw there, this one has remained rather surprisingly unscathed.

After reviewing my digital photos (still have to develop my film), I wish I'd have brought my tripod along, because most of my photos turned out somewhat soft. Unfortunately, I had to keep the equipment weight as light as possible, though, due to a neck injury. In hindsight, I would've rather suffered the consequences of bringing the tripod.

This is part of a destroyed computer, found on the grounds of the abandoned Whitby Psych facility on Saturday.

This was my first trip out there, and while it was creepy for about the first 5 minutes, I suprisingly had no fear while wandering throughout the buildings with Rannie, Jay and John. I think we managed to go through 5 or 6 buildings, but missed many more...it's pretty tiring after a few hours.

Found Objects

I always found it peculiar when I visited photoblogs with 'found photos' posted on them. I thought the odds of finding interesting photos on the street (or wherever) just seemed so unlikely. Until today, that is.

This morning on the way to work I happened across this photo lying on the sidewalk of my street. I think someone might've accidentally dropped it, because I just can't imagine it being discarded. The photo is fairly old and somewhat beat up, but in a charming way. I have not changed a thing to the photo, so what you see is exactly what it looks like.

I know this is a long shot, but if any of you Torontonians happen to recognize this, please contact me, as I'd like to get the photo back to the rightful owner. I know I'd be upset if I dropped a family photo from childhood and never saw it again.

Better Late Than Never

This hockey fan went all out in celebration of Team Canada's 3-2 championship game win over Finland in the World Cup of Hockey '04 tournament, back in September.

I have no idea how he managed to keep from passing out in the 25C heat that night. I was boiling wearing my hockey jersey, so I can only imagine how hot he must've been.

This shot is a tad late, but it's a little bit of therapy to fill the void of a locked out hockey season. Sigh.

Feeling The Power

Underneath the power lines near the Burlington Skyway. I loved the symmetry and the strong, but warm, light that was falling on the one side of the lines at sunset.

This shot was from a roll I developed myself last night. I haven't developed anything for quite a while, so I was happy that I didn't screw anything up too badly.

Oh! I bought a new (previously loved) toy today. Canon Elan 2. Someone at work was selling their SLR to go digital, and I'd been thinking about getting something a little sturdier than my Rebel (I blame Rannie and my jealousy over his new toy). For $450CAD, I got:

The camera is in mint condition, and feels so nice and solid in my hands. Although I was nervous at first to buy used, the guy who sold it to me wrote up an agreement stating that if I'm not satisfied, I can return it to him for a full refund. That made me much more confident in my fairly impulse purchase. Not bad, considering I had to purchase a flash soon anyway, and that would've been a good few $100.

I also priced all of the above items used on a local camera store's website, and it came out to over $900 on there, so I'm happy.

This was taking on a path running just parallel to the Burlington Skyway, on Saturday.

The funny thing is, this shot was originally supposed to be of Rannie. I really liked the location, but felt it needed a human touch, so I asked him to walk on the path. A second later, before I could take the shot, Rannie comes barreling towards me, pointing and loudly whispering "skater! skater!", so I managed to capture this guy just in time instead.

The colours have not been adjusted at all. The sun was just about to disappear for the evening and created these really great warm tones.

The Fairley-est of Them All

The other night Rannie and I checked out the Paper Bag Records 2nd Anniversary Party at Lee's Palace. The show featured Magneta Lane, Uncut, Controller Controller and the man above, Jake Fairley.

I'm not one for techno music, but really enjoyed Jake's set. Or maybe I just enjoyed staring at him all night. Either way, I had a good time.

I'm sure Rannie will be posting many more shots from the night shortly.

Paris In The Spring

This was taken in May 2003 from the Eiffel Tower. I originally shot it in colour, but like it much better in black and white. I decided to leave the trees green to break up the monotony of the buildings, and to highlight the Arc de Triomphe.

I have to admit, I didn't really fully enjoy myself in Paris at the time when I was there, for various reasons. I vowed I'd never go back, but I think I've changed my mind. I'd photograph the city much differently now, shooting more black and white and capturing more people and everyday life. Hindsight is always 20/20, though, right?

Self Portrait Gone Wrong

I have to do a self portrait for my Photo II class, and I really dislike having my photo taken, so this was my worst nightmare. Since I haven't used my Polaroid SX-70 for a while, I thought I'd be all brilliant and do a self portrait using that, since it would come out somewhat fuzzy and reflect how I feel about the project.

Problem is, I was trying to only get a bit of my reflection in the compact, and it's a challenge and a half to frame properly and do a self portrait with a Polaroid. Or maybe I'm just not all that bright, who knows. Took a few shots, none of which fully captured my reflection, and just when I finally figured out the right angle, I ran out of film. Ha!

This is my first Polaroid post, and I happen to like the composition of the compact in this shot. You can even see the slightest hint of an eye in the mirror. Self portrait, indeed.

One of the many Celtic high crosses found on the Rock of Cashel, in County Tipperary, Ireland -- my very favourite country to visit in the world.

I really need to plan a trip to go back sometime soon, if for nothing else than to replace the Claddagh ring that somehow went missing last December. I know I could just get a new ring here, but it's just not the same. If anyone happens to be heading to Kilkenny in the near future, let me know, I have a request!

I used flash on the second shot accidentally, but my finger was slightly blocking the flash output, so it gave off this crazy strong, but random light. This is actually my second attempt at that shot, but I blocked the flash a little bit more and got just the right amount of output. I really like the way it turned out...gives the shot that club feel.

While Detox Debbie was taking her nap, this party girl was enjoying a limo ride through, uh... the Holt's window. The funny thing is, I didn't even notice until now that the fake back window of the limo was a picture of Yonge St., just north of Dundas. Ha!

The best part about this photo? The only post-processing I did was adjust the image size. No fuss.

This is a shot of a window display at Holt Renfrew, depicting what I can only imagine must be the result of a night on the town during the Toronto Film Festival. Or, you know, just your average weeknight for me. ;)

I had the pleasure of dining and shooting last night with Natalie, Irina, and Rannie. We looked like the paparazzi wandering around Yorkville, trying to catch celebs at their trashiest of moments. However, no famous people were to be found, and the above shot was the closest I got to trash.

Special thanks to Rannie for being a dear by downloading and burning about 200 of my photos to disc...in a matter of less than 5 minutes. Sigh. I am so behind the times with my slow computer. Thanks, Rannie!!

Window Shopping

This is one of the window displays at The Bay, when the south-facing facade was transformed into Madison Square Garden in July, for the movie Cinderella Man. I was enamoured with the hand for some strange reason.

Yonge Street was absolutely insane last night. I have a ton of photos, but will have to wait until I either get my film developed or I can get back to downloading from my digital. Yes, yes, I'm getting a card reader!

In The Palm of His Hand

This was taken in May '03, in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. A man was feeding a large flock of little birds (and the odd pigeon) out of the palm of his hand, and encouraging onlookers to give it a try. It was neat feeling the beaks pecking at your palm.

In hindsight, though, I think that's rice, and I'm sure it can't be good for the birds. I hope they didn't end up in the bushes somewhere 'dead and bloated', to quote the Stone Temple Pilots.

Don't Drink and Bike

I found this bike displayed at the Heineken Brewery in Amsterdam, while I was touring it in May '03. I figured that it would be wrong to post a photo of Amsterdam and not have a bike in it. For those of you who have never been there and plan on going in the near future, a word of advice: Don't even worry about being run over by a car, because you'll be hit by at least 5 bikes before that would happen. Be careful!

The photo was originally in colour, but I liked it better desaturated, and thought I'd leave the baskets their original colour. Think it would look better fully b&w??

Took an unintentional hiatus for a few days. I've been pretty wiped out this week, and then when I finally had some free time to update, my digital camera decided to act all fussy and not let me download images. I think I may need a new connection cord, because I've tried everything I could think of to fix the problem, but nothing has worked.

This is another one of the studio outtakes of my friend Carrie, taken during my Photography I class. I had to pull something from the archives, due to the tech issue, and have always liked the softness of this shot. I start my next course this upcoming week, so hopefully I'll get more opportunity to play around in the studio and get better at using light.

Team Canada went a perfect 3-0 during round robin play of the World Cup of Hockey '04 tournament, ending up in first place in their pool. It's still undetermined who they'll face next Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

This is my newly purchased (and repulsively expensive) Mario Lemieux jersey. Since I was a kid (he's been my all-time idol for 20 years of my life now), I always wanted a Penguins jersey, but just never forked out the money for one. The Team Canada jersey is much better, because I could actually wear it to Leafs games vs. Pittsburgh without being heckled too much. Yes, it's true, I cheer for Pittsburgh over my own town's team. Bring on the hate mail.

I actually kind of screwed up the exposure on this shot, resulting in a somewhat vintage look. Turns out that I liked it much better than the properly exposed shots. Go figure.

I believe this ride is called The Fireball. It's scary...not that I know firsthand, because I'd probably throw up if I went on it. Rannie, Natalie and I were standing directly underneath the ride shooting away - we're actually quite lucky nobody tossed their cookies on us!

I like how you can see almost perfectly clear shadows of the riders...although, it really makes the ride look much smaller than what it is.

Cutting a Rug

This is Sean's nephew, Brody, who was the ringbearer at Sean & Kamila's wedding. First of all, he's the cutest kid ever. Second of all, don't ever get into a dance contest with him...he will smoke you.

This is him letting loose and stealing the show just after dinner, when the music started. This kid had moves that I haven't seen on anybody, let alone a 6 year old kid (I think he's six). I was in tears, I was laughing so hard. Sean & Kamila certainly had a hard act to follow for their first dance.

Tourist In My Own Town

On Saturday, I attended the Police Games at the Skydome. About half way through the games, they opened the roof of the 'dome, and although I've been there many times, I've never actually seen the place with the roof open. Wow, what a change in atmosphere.

Slowly, the CN Tower came into view as the roof retracted, and although I vowed to myself never to post the biggest tourist attraction in T.O., the lighting was so nice, that I just had to take some photos. Plus, I thought it was a somewhat unique perspective.

I originally wasn't going to take this photo. I felt that it just wasn't quite right without a fourth building to complete the image. Then these clouds came rolling by and one large cloud seemed to fill the space perfectly...and here we are.

I think these are all TD Towers, at King & Bay. I know one is definitely TD, but am not 100% sure about the others (can anyone confirm?).

This is the lovely and very talented Hawksley Workman, performing at the Toronto Street Festival back in July. If you have not seen this man in concert, you're missing out. I personally think he's the best musician to come around in a long time (and he's been around for quite a while), who hasn't gotten nearly the recognition he deserves.

This show was the first opportunity to use my Tamron 70-300mm lens (which I bought earlier that day). I just now got the film developed, and I'm quite satisfied with the results so far.

My two year old niece, Karisa, made this "pie" with lots of tender loving care for her mommy's birthday. According to Karisa, the ingredients are as follows:

- mud
- rocks from Nana's garden
- lots of flowers (also from Nana's garden)
- a sprinkle of grass
- an earwig

My sister was freaked out by the earwig, so she made my niece keep the pie outside, "so the flowers can grow."

This is my best friend, Carrie (yes, we have the same name), acting as my "model" for a lighting class I had. This was my first and only time in a studio, where I had to control everything from lighting to directing to make-up, etc. This is one of my favourite photos of her. It may not be technically perfect, but I was in control from start to finish (shooting, developing, enlarging, etc), so considering I had no experience, I'm very happy with the turn out.

Stone Roses

A palmetto from Isle of Palms, South Carolina, back in June of 2002. While I wish I'd have gotten more of the trunk, my friend Greg really likes this photo and I promised I'd post it some day.

I took this with my little Canon Sureshot Owl point & shoot (and pray), using Ilford HP5 film. I'm almost positive that was the first roll of black & white film I ever bought. I remember how excited I was to get the roll back, and was hooked on b&w immediately. I also remember being surprised at how white the background came out on this photo...I had no concept of looking beyond the subject at the time (and sometimes I still don't, ha!), but this works for me.

It's hard to believe that in a span of just over one year, I've gone from only owning my Canon Sureshot Owl to owning 9 cameras. I haven't really had a chance to use some of them very much yet, but seeing as I was "let go" from my job today, I'll have much more time to play around and shoot over the next little while. How very exciting!

This is a dancer who performed at an event I photographed. There were about 10 little girls performing, but I kept looking at this one, wanting to pinch her cheeks. I don't think her mother would've been too pleased with some stranger grabbing at her child's cheeks, though, so I settled for a photo instead - with mom's permission!

Saturday evening sunset, as seen from the top floor terrace at the Mississauga Civic Centre. It's rare these days that I'm at a high enough vantage point to get a clear view of a sunset, so I'm glad it produced some beautiful colours that night. The sun is so bright, it actually hurts my eyes a bit if I stare at the photo for too long.

Booze Goggles

Evidence of a good Saturday night. You'll notice how the water glasses and coffee cup made nice pristine decorations...we had other priority beverage holders to put to use. I had some booze goggles on at this point in the evening, but kept on taking photos like a trooper. In the end, I think I took a total of 235ish photos of Sean & Kamila's wedding. And it'll probably take me 235ish days to go through them all!

Ah, Tim Horton's - a staple of many Canadian diets (mine excluded).

I found this while walking along a path near Cherry Beach. I thought it was interesting that all I could see around me was greenery, then out of nowhere I see this rusted "thing" (I have no idea what it actually is) with a Tim's cup in it, sticking out of the grass. At least the person didn't throw the cup on the ground, I suppose.

Another shot from quarterfinals tennis action on Friday. Our seats were way up in the nosebleeds for this match, but the view was still pretty good. I really can't complain about the new Rexall Centre, as every seat in the house gives you an excellent view of the action and has a great atmosphere.

This is the #1 seed, Roger Federer, following through on a backhand shot. He won in two straight sets (7-5,6-4) over French player, Fabrice Santoro. Federer is now set to play Andy Roddick, seeded #2, in the finals today. If tickets weren't so expensive, I would be at that match in a heartbeat! Alas, I am now poor and will be watching on TSN.

Dig If You Will The Picture

Courtesy of last minute free tickets provided by my place of employment, I saw Prince last night (technically tonight, since I haven't gone to bed yet) at the ACC, with a few co-workers and Jay, who I must say is by far the biggest Prince fan I've ever met. Despite the fact that we literally had the second last row of seats in the house, and were practically hitting our heads on the roof, it was a really excellent show. Prince sure still can move for an old guy...in heels!

This shot was taken during Purple Rain, the last song of the show. I have about 130 photos to sort through and am way too tired to do that tonight, so even though Prince doesn't have a face in this pic, and it's not all that sharp, I really like it, especially considering how far away I was. Perhaps I will post a few more in the near future.

The Briefest Moment

At an event I was shooting, I saw this woman and asked her if I could photograph her. She didn't understand what I was saying, but as soon as her friend translated, she very slightly nodded her head without changing expression and decided that she should step into the garden to have the photo taken there. I was a little surprised to see her climb over the brick separation into the thick of the garden, but went with it. She didn't change her expression the whole time standing there. After I took the photo, I extended my hand to help her out and she gave me one of the warmest smiles I'd seen in a while, then almost as if it didn't happen, she went back to what you see in the photo.

A month ago this past weekend, Sid (my co-worker) and his partner, David, ran off to city hall to get married. I caught this moment as they were literally rushing to the car to get downtown on time...after I subjected them to several photos, of course.

I have to get better at not feeling guilty about photographing people in public. I was really torn about photographing this couple, but the setting was so nice and they just looked so at peace that I wanted to capture it.

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable about taking candid shots of people (not including performers and whatnot)? And if so, do you do it anyway, or refrain?

Oh, and for those of you who own the Canon 300D - how do you like it? What don't you like about it? I've read a number of reviews online, and am considering buying one soon so I was hoping to get some feedback from people in the photoblogging community. I'm really getting irritated with my Canon A80, and wish I'd have held out for the 300D, instead. I find that the A80 lacks crisp focus, especially at a distance. It's really difficult to tell how focused you are by looking at the lcd screen, as well. Arg!

While checking on my landlady's cats tonight, I noticed that the lone light turned on created this long shadow across her entire island countertop. I think the flowers are lilacs, although I'm probably wrong since I don't know the first thing about flowers.

I took this a while back on someone else's digital camera, but I'm pretty sure this is from the Distillery District (seeing a trend here? I'm obsessed with the place). A fire alarm may not be all that exciting, but I really liked the way the lighting cast these shadows.

I caught sight of this little ladybug in the washroom at work, of all places. Noticed her (are all ladybugs female?? I suppose they can't be, eh?) on a ledge beside the sink as I was washing my hands, and ran back to my office to grab my camera. When I got back, she was perched on the tap handle and I waited patiently while she composed herself (okay, that's a lie, I had to gently nudge her up to the top a wee bit), so I could get a decent shot. I'm really glad nobody happened to walk in at the time, because I'm sure people would think I'm insane. Hey, I don't care where it is, if a photo op presents itself like that, I'm taking it!

Caught In Mid Verse

A musician frozen mid-performance at an event I worked on in May. He caught sight of my lens just as I pushed the shutter button, and I'm glad he did...he has a really great spirit about him that I probably wouldn't have caught if he didn't notice.

I have passed by this sign on Bayview Ave. almost every single weekday for the past two and a half years, and just finally got around to photographing it yesterday. This sign is stuck in the middle of a random small patch of grass that serves no other purpose than to look green and pretty...and hold this sign, obviously. It really does put a smile on my face when I see it, because of it's thoughtfulness and interesting placement.

This is my first attempt at reversing a lens and using it as a macro. I didn't quite get the focus I was hoping for, but I can't expect to master it on the first try, right? Besides, this strawberry only lasted for one shot...my mouth was watering like crazy, so I had to eat it. I have no discipline!

I found this Thunderbird while wandering around the Distillery District a few weeks back. I'm assuming it was being used for a movie shoot, as it was roped off and security was watching it. The car was cool, but I was more interested in photographing the rich colour.

I love photographing in the Distillery, because you never know what you're going to get when you head there. Every time I've gone there has been something new...and I go a lot!

Happy Accident

I was in my backyard, photographing the textures of some wet firewood (sounds exciting, doesn't it?), when I felt something bounce off my arm and appear on my lcd screen. A cherry! I didn't even know we had a cherry tree. I obviously don't use the yard much. In any case, I decided the cherry was meant to be in the photo, so I recomposed (leaving the cherry where it landed) and voila!

The Weakerthans

Continuing yesterday's theme, here is one more shot from the silos at Cherry Beach. You find things in the strangest places...this Weakerthans sticker was freshly stuck to a silo (not the same one as yesterday), as if it was the most natural place to put a sticker. No other stickers or graffiti to keep it company. I wonder if many other people have noticed it? The sticker is so white, it almost doesn't seem real in the photo...and for the record, I didn't add the sticker in Photoshop!

A close-up shot of peeling paint on an abandoned silo on private property near Cherry Beach. This photo was taken a few weeks ago, the day after I bought my Canon A80...the silos were quite an interesting place to test the camera!

The Chess Club

There is a little park on the NW corner of Queen and Church, where men frequently congregate to play chess and attract quite a crowd of observers. I was the only woman in sight when I photographed this scene yesterday, and although I'm almost always apprehensive about taking photos of people without asking, none of the men seemed to mind...in fact, a lot of them barely noticed.

I was actually more fascinated with the social aspect of the scene than photographing it. There was a very dynamic group of people playing together, who you'd be unlikely to see interacting in other settings. It felt very natural sitting down beside the tables and observing the games, as though you were part of the activity, rather than an outsider looking in.

I'm still trying to figure out Photoshop...I'm annoyed by how blown out the trees look at the top of the photo, but for the life of me could not figure out how to adjust them so they look natural. Any suggestions?

Lasky vs. Braddock

The facade of The Bay in downtown Toronto has been transformed to look like the exterior of Madison Square Garden, for the filming of The Cinderella Man. This film is a remake that stars Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger, and is set in the 1930s. All the display windows of The Bay have been converted into storefronts from that period, as well, although most were covered up when Gary and I went by.

From my understanding, the MSG signage should be there for a while, so I'm sure it will show up in a lot of photoblogs.

Happy Canada Day!

This is one of the very first photos I took after I bought my SLR camera. It is also one of the very first photos I sold, so I thought it would be fitting to post as the first official entry of delineated.com.

A big thank you to Gary for ending months of frustration for me. I'd been struggling with Movable Type and was about to give up, when he offered to program my site. In less than 24hrs, he removed MT, coded the site and made it functional. I secretly think he did it just so he wouldn't have to listen to my whining anymore. ;) Thanks again, buddy!
